Forum disabled until secure replacement can be created.
I'm sorry, folks. There were just too many hack attempts on the forum. The software that we were provided with by our hosting company was full of security holes and I had to spend too much time undoing all of the defacements.
The Good News
Fortunately, the hosting company apparently offered a replacement (without telling me...) and I'm working to get it up and running ASAP. If you have any suggestions or features you'd like the new forum to support, email me and I'll see what I can do.
The Bad News
Sadly, the most recent defacement was pretty deep and it made retaining any of our previous forum data essentially impossible. The replacement software has a way to import from the old software and I was trying to make time to get the replacement in place before something like this happened. Obviously I was too late. You will all have to re-join the replacement forum once it's up.
The Future
For now, I'm hoping to get the new forum up and running in the next week or two. Once this year is up and I'm no longer treasurer, I intend to completely redesign the entire site. I think we're due for a new look up here. I'm hoping to introduce some things that will help increase our traffic and hopefully that'll translate into more participation on the forums. Stay tuned!
Update 10/15/2006
The replacement software offered by our hosting company works pretty well. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer quite as much security as I was hoping it would. Some features don't quite work the way I'd like, either. I figure if we've been forced to replace the software we might as well do it up right. I'm on the hunt for forum software that will provide the security and functionality we need.
For those of you who are familliar with this kind of thing, we're on a unix host and we're forced to replace a very buggy phpbb installation. The alternate was YaBB. We're hoping for something that has a stronger sign-up process. One that requires admin activation would be nice. Anything to help reduce the fake spammers and script kiddies. Also, being able to apply images to a post (more than just one, at the bottom) without needing the images to be hosted elsewhere would be very nice.
Ultimately, if I don't locate one that works for us, I may go with a Yahoo! group instead. That's my last resort, though. Stay tuned!
